Marcus and I have spent several hours a day the last three days (yes, really...4-5 hours a day or more) trying to figure out what our medical care options will be once we move to Texas and do not have insurance for several months. We do not qualify for chip or medicare so we had to begin calling around to get quotes from doctors offices.
I have been shocked by how many pediatricians and clinics will not even see us if we do not have insurance. I have been even more shocked at the prices the pediatricians charge that will see us without insurance...nearly $500 for a well child visit and immunizations.
Marcus and I finally decided to stop checking pediatrician prices and start searching for family practitioners. We found this to be a great decision as Marcus called his old family doctor and discovered he will do a well child or any other visit for only $75. He does not immunize at his office, but we have found (after calling the state health department) that we can get James immunized at our City Health Department for $10 the first visit and $5 every time after.
I am sure this is probably a very uninteresting post for most of you to read, but figuring out our health care options has really been important to us. I feel a lot more at ease having this information now. As long as we can avoid any dire emergencies I think we'll be just fine making it through the period of time we'll have to without insurance.

I am so glad you were able to figure out something that will work. It's scary to not have medical insurance- I pray all goes well for you those first few months.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a Minor Emergency Center!!! I got charged $250 JUST for an office visit, plus whatever the shot was. I didn't have insurance at the time! MAN! That was cra-zy!
Good luck in your move next week! God bless ya'll!
